I work with Virtual Studio Technology and VST instruments. This method of making music is in common practice for studio albums and provides many advantages to the modern music producer. Thousands of instruments are available and each instrument can be infinitely honed to create the sound desired. Traditional instruments that would be unrealistic to use due to cost, availability or rarity are available at the VST producer's fingertips, allowing novel and innovative sounds to be explored.

Every music producer has their own methods of creating music.
Personally, I do not use any kind of pre-recorded backing track,
I prefer to notate every instrument myself, including percussion.

I usually begin with writing the melody as this gives me a feel
for the lead instruments I would like to use for the piece. Once I
have notated the basic melody I spend considerable time
choosing and honing the instruments. Next, I write a simple
rhythm. From this skeleton I gradually build the piece by adding
more instruments, verses, stanzas, flourishes, ornaments etc. -
constantly honing and adjusing the mix as I go. The final act is
to master the tracks so that the resulting CD or download is
industry compliant and a pleasant listening experience.
