Welcome
"He's writing songs of love - bass notes below, treble above
Rhythms and sweet melodies, songs of joy and songs of melancholy..."
Lyric from the song 'A Quiet Guy' by Phil Morland © 2026.

Phil Morland Bio
I am a songwriter, lyricist and music producer creating Mellow Pop, Smooth Soul and Quiet Storm recordings, purely for the joy of doing so. Most of my songs are gentle, mid-tempo pieces written and produced in my own particular style. Lyrically, I explore the agonies and ecstasies of love and life.
Every musician has different methods of working. I tend to begin each song by writing the lyrics as this gives me an idea of the musical form and tempo that I will use. Next, I compose a basic melody and rhythm on a keyboard. Gradually I build the piece up, bring in more instruments, add flourishes, ornaments etc., constantly tweaking the mix as I go. Each instrument is notated and engraved as sheet music. Vocals are then added where appropriate and further adjustments are made as needed. When I am finally happy with a completed song I master the track so that it is in the format that I want, that it provides a pleasant listening experience and is industry compliant.
I create my songs using Digital Audio Workstations, Virtual Studio Technology and VSTi instruments. This way of making music provides several advantages over older analogue methods. Thousands of instruments are available and each instrument can be infinitely modified to create a unique sound. Traditional instruments that would be unrealistic to use due to cost or rarity are available at the VST producer's fingertips, allowing novel and innovative music to be explored. The vast majority of recording studios now use DAWs and VST as part of their workflow - it's the modern way.
For me, one of the most enjoyable aspects of creating a song is writing the lyrics. Unfortunately, I have not been blessed with a decent singing voice so I use VSTi vocal instruments instead. My intention is not to diminish the unique sound of a professional singer, rather to allow people to hear how my songs and lyrics might come together, given my own non-existent vocal abilities.
