Welcome

"He's writing songs of love - bass notes below, treble above

Rhythms and sweet melodies, songs of joy and songs of melancholy..."

Lyric from the song 'A Quiet Guy' by Phil Morland © 2026.

Phil Morland  Bio

I am a songwriter, lyricist and music producer creating Quiet Storm, Smooth Soul and Late-night Pop recordings. All the music I produce is 100% my own.

Every producer has different methods of working. I tend to begin each song by writing the lyrics first, this gives me an idea of the musical form and tempo that I will use. Next, I compose a basic melody and rhythm on a keyboard. Gradually I build the piece up by bringing in more instruments, adding flourishes, ornaments etc., constantly tweaking the mix as I go. Each instrument is notated and engraved as sheet music. Vocals are then added where appropriate and further adjustments are made as needed. When I am finally happy with a completed song I master the track so that it is in the format that I want, that it provides a pleasant listening experience and is industry compliant.

I create my songs entirely in my studio, using Virtual Studio Technology, VSTi instruments and Digital Audio Workstations. This way of making music provides several advantages over older analogue methods. Thousands of instruments are available and each instrument can be infinitely modified to create a unique sound. Traditional instruments that would be unrealistic to use due to cost or rarity are available at the VST producer's fingertips, allowing novel and innovative music to be explored. The vast majority of recording studios now use VST and DAWs extensively - it's the modern way.

For me, one of the most enjoyable tasks when creating a song is writing the lyrics. Unfortunately, I have not been blessed with a decent singing voice so I use VSTi vocal instruments as an alternative. My intention is not to diminish the unique sound of a professional singer, rather to give people the chance to hear how my songs and lyrics might come together, given my own non-existent vocal abilities.
